They are all old reruns

My wife was sorely disappointed today. She had stayed home from work because she was sick with a bad sinus infection. She spent most of the day in bed, but she said she was looking forward to watching Dr. Phil for a change. She hasn’t been able to see any of his shows this year because of her work schedule. And she has been too busy to be able to tape the shows to watch later. So she was feeling that if she had to stay home sick, at least she’d feel good about being able to watch Dr. Phil. She was sorely disappointed when she turned the television on at 3pm, only to find that this summer they are featuring OLD reruns from years past – the show was one she had seen before a long time ago! So sad to get her hopes up, just to have them dashed by old reruns!

The curse of substance abuse

It seems to me that the “War on Drugs” that the country declared many years ago is not being won.  As the economy worsens, and people are losing their jobs and homes, more people are turning to some form of substance abuse to relieve their anxiety.  Many people who have lost their jobs and are unable to find new ones are turning to crime to help pay for their house payments!  This is an intolerable situation, and I sure hope that relief arrives soon!  Fortunately, for those individuals who are lucky enough to realize that they have become addicted to their “recreational” drink or snort, there is a lot of addiction resource information on the Internet, as well as through Free Clinics and family physicians.

A plethora of alcohol rehab programs and cocaine rehab centers are cropping up everywhere.  Some are designed and cater for the financially affluent.  Sure must be nice to be able to recover in a luxurious spa-like surrounding!  Other centers are provided at low-cost, or no-cost to the financially struggling.  These centers do the best that they can, but with limited funding available I have to wonder how effective they can possibly be.  Once the addict leaves the building, the addict needs a lot of support.  That support may not always be easily accessible to those with limited funding, largely due to the inability of the addict with limited funding to be able to change their external surroundings!  One thing is for sure, it is a struggle for the addict to get clean and stay clean.

Electric scooters

As my parents get older, they have been having more difficulty navigating around their house.  My mother is on oxygen 24 hours a day, and tires easily.  When we go out shopping, or out to dinner, we have to stop frequently to let her rest.  So my wife and I are considering buying an electric wheelchair for her to use.

Having something like that would enable us to take her a lot more places.  We’d really enjoy taking her to shows and family parties, but it has been a major effort to do that in the past.

There are so many different options available to her; I’d like to get one that folds easily and fits into the trunk of my car.  Something like the Breeze electric travel scooter from the thescooterstore.com website would be perfect!

What to choose?

Our kids have been bugging us to buy some exercise equipment to put in the family room.  They have been complaining about how hard it is to travel to a gym to exercise, and that there are a lot of times when they don’t want to exercise outdoors because of inclement weather of biting insects.  And of course our suggestions about doing jumping jacks, squats, and sit-ups are met with loud protests.

My biggest concern about investing money in exercise machines is that after spending a huge amount of money on an elliptical machine, exercise bike, or treadmill is that after only a couple of short months of use that the kids will decide that using the equipment to exercise is “boring” or “too much trouble” and that I will have wasted a lot of money.

Fortunately, I have a friend who has all three of those machines and he said that we could borrow one of them for a couple of months, then the other, and then the other and we can see how much use they get.  And THEN we can decide whether or not to buy one!  I think that’s a good idea, don’t you?

I hate it when my wife gets sick

Well my wife has caught the latest virus that’s going around. I hate it when she gets sick! She tries so hard to keep doing the housework, and going to work, and she is too stubborn to just go to bed and rest! I think she is afraid that the world will stop turning if she takes a couple of days to recuperate!

I’ve called the doctor and he is calling in a prescription for her to the local pharmacy. Thank goodness they deliver! They should have her medicines out here any minute now!

How can we find out the truth about diet pills?

I am totally amazed by the sheer number of diet pills that are on the market!  I can only imagine how confused and frustrated people could become if they were looking for an effective and safe diet pill to take.  Personally, I have been fortunate enough in my life to (so far) not be in the position to be concerned about my weight.  I have a very fast metabolism.  I expect though, in the not too distant future that my metabolism will slow down with age and I will have to be cautious about the foods that I eat.

I hope that I never have to resort to taking any kind of diet pills; I just don’t like taking pills!  I don’t even like taking over the counter pain relief for a headache!  But I digress.  There are a huge number of diet pills “out there” and it can get confusing about which ones are the best ones to take.  That’s why the consumerpricewatch.net website was created – to help the consumer to learn about the options that are out there.  Their website rates and reviews many of the diet pills that are currently on the market.  I was reading their nuphedragen reviews and was impressed with their candor about their concerns about its safety.  I highly recommend this website to anyone that has questions they want answered about diet pills.

Freegans

I was just listening to the news on tv this morning, while reading my emails, and noticed a story about how freegans are dumpster diving for their meals. This particular story, though interesting, was kinda disturbing. I agree that there are a lot of grocery stores and restaurants that throw away perfectly good food, but I can’t imagine going through a dumpster full of trash to fish out the food to eat. If the food was segregated from other garbage, maybe. But the food is mixed in with all of the other garbage, it could have all kinds of bacteria and filth transferred to it that might not wash off.

That story kinda freaked me out!

Getting help

I think one of the reasons that I get so concerned about people self-medicating is that it can quickly turn into a drug addiction.  I’ve heard of so many cases where a well-meaning family member gives a different family member their prescription pain killers to alleviate a temporary painful situation, but that the recipient then likes the euphoric effect so much that they start stealing the pain killers from the real patient.  And before you know it, that results in having two people in trouble – the one who needed the pain pills in the first place has run out and can’t get more, and the one who has been stealing them has now become addicted and can’t get more legally.

I have to say that I don’t know any family at all that has never had to send one of their family members to one or more drug treatment program to try to cure some kind of drug addiction.  I’m really glad that there are drug treatment centers available to help these families, but I think it is a shame that we need them in the first place.

Self medicating

I always get nervous when I hear that someone is sick and is “self medicating.” It makes me think that they have a condition that should be treated by a doctor and that they are resorting to using illegal drugs instead of buying a prescription.

Having said that, my poor wife has a sinus infection and she is miserable. Thankfully her doctor has given her a prescription so she should be feeling better in a few days. But she is left with how to treat the symptoms in the meantime. The “day time” medicines don’t address her runny nose, and watery eyes. The “nighttime” medicine addresses it all but strangely enough it keeps her awake! Wired, but groggy! So she has started to “self medicate” and take a half dose of “day time” and a half dose of “night time” medicines. That seems to work the best for her. I think it sounds strange, but if it works, then I’m all for it!

Overheard at the pharmacy

Yesterday I went to the pharmacy to pick up some allergy medicine for my wife.  The poor dear has been suffering from her spring allergies and had run out of her antihistamine.  She likes one of the brands that you have to buy from behind the pharmacy counter.  What a pain in the neck it is to have to go through all of that rigamarole to buy something that is supposed to be “over the counter” medicine with no prescription required!

But that is not the point of this post.  While standing in line to be waited on, I heard a guy at the counter telling the pharmacist that he wanted to buy all of the Tamiflu in the pharmacy so he could sell it online and make a huge profit off of the fears of ”the people” catching the swine flu!  Well, the pharmacist told him that he needs a prescription to buy Tamiflu, and he tried to argue with her.  Of course he went home empty handed, but I was quite angered by his desire to try to hoard the medicine and make a fortune with it over the Internet!  What a low-class kind of guy!

Additional training

My niece just can’t seem to make up her mind what she wants to do with her life.  She bounces around from job to job, only working for about a month or two in one place before leaving it.  At first she says she really likes the job, but the initial euphoria wears off fairly quickly.  She keeps talking about wanting to go to one of the massage therapy schools and becoming a massage therapist.  I always tell her that I think that is a great idea.  She’s a good worker, and has plenty of upper body strength.

The big catch for her though, is that she insists that she wants to go to school in Hawaii.  Well, her folks can barely support their family in the state that they are in, and I keep suggesting that she find a place where she can go and still live at home.  I have found a website called career-education.net that helps people find training schools around the country, and there are schools close to where she lives that she could go to.  I know that she could do that, but she is adamant about going to Hawaii.  So until she changes her attitude about that I guess she will just keep on doing what she is doing!

I like to read other people’s blogs

One thing that I’ve been doing while recovering from my broken toes is spending more time on the Internet, reading other people’s blogs.  My sister sent me a bunch of  links to her favorite blogs to read, and I’ve been reading them.  It really is very interesting and fun to see what other people are up to, what they are thinking and writing about.  I’ve even left a few comments on some of the blogs that I’ve read here and there.  I’ve also found some interesting sites about nature and science and news.  I think I could easily spend most of my day on the Internet, just reading and absorbing all of the awesome information that is out there!  I find myself clicking on links, clicking on more links, clicking on more links and before long I realize that I can’t even to remember what the first article was that I was reading about!  Very entertaining!

Watch what you eat

Some people are just so stupid it is hard to believe. I was going through old newspapers and noticed a headline about people getting sick from eating a homemade stew. The story was that an ambulance had been dispatched to a residence because “a person was sick.” When the ambulance arrived at the house, there were a LOT of people sick, and they were all transported to the hospital. I don’t know how many ambulances actually were used, I just know that they all ended up at the hospital. They were calling it a “mystery illness.” Well, it turned out that the people took ill because they had all eaten a stew that was made with some herbs picked from in front of the house that had been sprayed with some kind of pesticide and was not properly washed before used in the food. I can’t believe that people are so stupid as to use pesticide on their crops and then not wash it off! To give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they didn’t KNOW that pesticide had been used, but still for goodness sake you should wash your food before eating it, a dog could have passed by and peed on it!

Broke three toes

I have an old sports injury in my right knee that causes my knee to “go out” without warning sometimes.  I injured myself many years ago in a karate class, I overextended my knee during a kick, and it has never been the same.  Well anyway, this morning I got up out of bed and my knee went out.  I lurched forward and caught myself with my hands, but I broke three toes on my right foot just the same.  I had never broken any bones before, and so I was completely surprised by how painful it was!  Well, it wasn’t too long before my entire foot turned black and blue so I went to the doctor who confirmed the broken toes and just taped them together.  The doctor said that there really isn’t anything more that they do for broken toes.  I figured that there would be some kind of splint!  So now I’m hobbling around on crutches for the next few weeks, and I am very annoyed over the entire situation!
