Yesterday I read some exciting news about the discovery of a planet in the Milky Way galaxy that actually orbits two suns. Just like the planets described in science fiction books and movies, such as “Star Trek,” this planet has two suns that are visible from the planet’s surface every day. However, they believe this planet is so cold and hostile that it cannot support life as we know it.

The scientists who made this discovery gave the planet the name, Tatooine after the fictional planet in the “Star Wars” films that boasts a double sunset. I hope to read more about this exciting discovery – I can only imagine what it would be like to have two suns.

As a kid, we had a lot of U.S. and Russian space program events. There were launches of satellites, rockets, shuttles and the space station. There were kids in my classes who had a parent that worked for NASA. They would bring things into “Show and Tell” like space food, photographs of them at the Kennedy Space Center or standing by an astronaut. And I was fascinated by all of it.

My parents supported my interest in the space program by taking me to museums, a tour of the Kennedy Space Center one spring when we were in Florida for spring Break, and they sent me to Space Camp in Huntsville when I was 12 years old. They bought a microscope for me when I was 15 and several of my friends had microscopes, too. We were a band of geeks, in a way.

So now that we are all adults, we still stay in touch and talk about the space program. We are devastated that the space program has been shut down. Not that we want to be astronauts, but because we believe in space exploration. Some of us still have our childhood microscopes and keep them repaired with microscope parts that we order over the internet. In fact, I hope to pass along my microscope to my son some day.

My mother is exciting with the new outdoor planters that she received from us kids for Christmas. She has been itching to get an outddor planter or two for when the weather breaks in a few short months. Since moving into their new home she has been busy with the inside of the house and her indoor planters and is ready to make some changes to the outside come spring.

My mother has always been known for her green thumb. The house we all grew up in had the most wonderful window box planters that all the neighbors were very envious of, she really got a charge out of that. We also always had a nice vegetable garden in the back that we were known with sharing the harvest around the neighbor each season. The only indoor planter that I can remember back then was one that always held a nice and healthy mother-in-law’s tongue that ironically enough her mother-in-law bought for her shortly after my folks were married. My mother much preferred to be outside in the sun tending all of her beauties.

As a boy, we had a wood burning fireplace in our living but we never used it much. My dad would tell me that it is too expensive, a mess to clean up, and it doesn’t really add heat to the house – a fire can actually suck all the heat out of a house and send it straight up the chimney! So I have never been a big fan of wood fires, either. Then, I discovered Gas Logs and having a fire in the fireplace has opened up to all kinds of opportunities in my home.

A fireplace with gas logs can add heat to a house and leaves no messy ashes to clean up. If you want the best selection of realistic looking logs in the fireplace, R. H. Peterson Real Fyre Gas Logs are where I found over two dozen styles and types of gas logs that look like wood.

I’d like to get Vented Gas Logs for my living room and find gas logs that look like the real oak trees that are in my back yard. Once they are lit, they looks so real, if you didn’t know they were gas logs you would think they are real oak logs burning.

Well, she had one of those single cup coffee makers and a variety of different coffee flavors to pick from. I’ve not had a chance to try one until today. It was hard to make up my mind which flavor to try. I went with a traditional Columbia coffee – and it was delicious.

The entire East Coast of America is on alert for Hurricane Earl and two other names storms in the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane brushed North Carolina’s coastline and is headed for New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.

And half the world away, the people of New Zealand were awakened by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake at 4:00 this morning. With the power outages and amount of damage to buildings, I have not yet heard if anyone was killed in the earthquake, but I did see pictures on CNN this morning of the buildings that have collapsed and the rubble in the streets.

Mother Nature is being quite the bully today.

Hurricane Earl continues to head for the shoreline of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. This is a category 3 hurricane and the Governor of North Carolina has order all non residents to leave the Outer Banks islands and beaches of Nags Head. Because of the serious danger of rip tides and up to 30 ft high waves, all beaches along the North Carolina coast have been closed.

This is serious business, especially right now, when so many families were going to the beaches for the Labor Day holiday weekend. I hope everyone heeds the warnings and that we have no loss of life from Hurricane Earl.

People who love golf and have not yet been fortunate enough to visit Myrtle Beach golf courses are missing some of the best golfing in America. Just the sheer number of available golf courses is staggering – there are close to 80 courses in the area known as South Carolina’s “Grand Strand.” This area of practically endless gold tees and greens stretches along the South Carolina coastline all the way up to, and in to, North Carolina.

First time visitors should probably log on to http://www.myrtlebeachgolf.net and read up on the different courses and greens fees. Some of the courses are lit at night and some are open at the crack of dawn. If you are serious about marathon golfing, you can easily play 36 holes in one day.

Myrtle Beach golf packages can include discounts on greens fees and cart rentals, plus discounts on the hotels or resorts in the area. You can even arrange your tee times online and have everything set up before you leave home.

Apparently there is a very large hurricane heading across the Atlantic Ocean that is causing concern for people like us who live along the East Coast. The storm has sustained winds measuring over 150 miles per hour – which is extremely high winds. In my experience, any wind over 60 mph is a serous threat, and wind over 110 mph is very dangerous.

I have been in hurricanes that had winds over 130 mph and have seen the damage and danger first hand. I certainly hope that this hurricane loses some of the force if it does come ashore along the East Coast as projected.
