Maricopa County is located somewhere within Arizona for an otherwise small county it has been able to attract a lot of headlines lately. The events from Maricopa had attracted even the attention of President Donald Trump.
The former sheriff of Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio had been able to draw in the president on a matter that was being handled by the judicial system that otherwise would have seen justice served to a man who for one reason all another had become so bold that ignoring federal court orders had become the order of the day. He ran the sheriff department of Maricopa County as his private police force focused on only what he qualified as important in his books.
He had no issues using the department settling personal scores and vendettas and this he did with little regard for the consequences of his actions. The sheriff became so bold that he was making national headlines and all for the wrong reason. His dalliance with president Trump, however, began during the Obama era.
When Trump began his campaign known as the Birther campaign, which by all metrics was a racist campaign whose main message was that Obama was not born in America. Trump then would demand that the president produce his birth certificate and it was no surprise that Sheriff Arpaio was among the highest ranking law enforcement officials that endorsed this message. Their bubble would, however, be burst when the president in a somewhat mocking way produced his birth certificate and the movement would eventually fizzle out quietly. This was not the only racist campaign that Sheriff Joe would engage in but rather just a continuation of his already established style of doing things.
The sheriff ran a department that was well adept in racially profiling minorities. He was particularly nasty towards Hispanic immigrants. The sheriff fully endorsed the tough on immigration stance, and this would soon spiral out into a full-blown war against anyone that did not look like him.
His actions did not, however, go unnoticed as a particular pair of journalists by the names of Jim Larkin and Micheal Lacey would take it upon themselves to continually report on his misdeeds. The duo had already been running the Phoneix new times for some years and had established themselves as very credible investigative journalists. This level of credibility is what helped them propel the atrocities being committed by the sheriff to the national level. Most National agencies had not been as involved in the same as they considered it a local matter that had little to do with the national discourse.
This would, however, change in 2007 when the sheriff took the bold step of arresting Jim and Micheal. The events of that fateful night would soon snowball and little did the sheriff know that his actions would forever change a lot.
The condemnations and demand for their release were fast and swift, and this one had no way of being turned around. The sheriff would be forced to release Lacey and Larkin and drop all the charges as fast as he had made the arrest.
