Happy ghoul day!

I wonder how many people I’m going to be seeing around town dressed up in costumes today!  I saw quite a few of them yesterday!  I guess they decided to dress up for work and don’t work on weekends!  I’m always amused on Halloween to see how many people actually DO put on costumes and go to work!

We’ve bought a couple of bags of Snickers fun size bars to pass out in case we get any trick or treaters tonight.  I know that we probably should have bought something that is peanut – free, but that is our own personal favorites, and we usually don’t get ANY trick or treaters, so why should be buy something we don’t like ourselves?  We’ll probably be the ones eating it!  Whatever you do, I hope you have fun and stay safe!

More politics

I thought the number of phone calls I got during the presidential election were bad!  I’ve been getting several phone calls every day from the organizations behind the different gubernatorial candidates!  It is very aggravating!  The phone rings, I answer it.  There is a long pause at the other end and then a recording starts off about the upcoming gubernatorial election.  I immediately hang up.  I already know who I am going to vote for, and these calls are not going to change my mind.  I just wish the calls would stop!

Bargain hotels

My sister Julie tells me that she wants to take advantage of the Accor Hotels 3-Day Super Sale Asia Pacific to take a vacation to Japan. She’s always been fascinated by Japan, and all things Japanese. Her entire house is decorated with Japanese motif, and her gardens are done in the Japanese style. She has even taken Japanese language classes!

So when she found out that she could get a bargain on hotel rooms because of this super sale she jumped right on it. She asked me if I wanted to join her, but I can’t get away from work on such short notice. So she is going to go with our other sister Sherri.

I’m glad that she has the chance to go and fulfill a travel dream of hers. And I’m glad that Sherri is going to go with her. I get nervous just thinking about one of my sisters traveling to a foreign country alone!

So for now I’m busy trying to help them find a good deal on plane tickets to get them to Japan for their vacation. After all, what good is a bargain hotel room if you can’t get a decent air fare? I have to admit that her excitement is contagious; I’m a little bit jealous that I can’t go with them!

Friendly service is a good thing

Over the past week I’ve had to go to the big orange home improvement store several times to pick up a few things for a project I’m doing at home.  I’ve spent about $2000 there just this past week!  But I’ve noticed that when I go there if I have a question about something I have a very hard time finding anyone to answer my questions!  I don’t know if they are understaffed or if they are hiding from me!  Oh wait a minute – I remember now – they ARE understaffed!  According to the Internet they are hiring at that store, but when I go in and talk to them they tell me that there has been a hiring freeze on for several years!  So THAT’s why I can’t find anyone to wait on me!

Well, I was given a $10 coupon to use at the big blue home improvement store that is at the opposite end of town, and I decided that I would go there today to pick up a few things that I needed.  They had employees all over the place!  And they were all stopping to say hello and ask me if I needed any help!  And it was wonderful!  They did help me find some of the things that I needed, and they helped me to load the stuff in my car.  I’ll be going back there again the next time I need home improvement supplies!

The rodeo

When I was younger my father took the whole family to a local rodeo one hot summer’s afternoon.  I’ve always been fascinated with everything rodeo – from the trick riding to the roping to the bronc-busting and bull riding!  I loved watching the rodeo clowns do their work, too.  Those rodeo clowns work hard to help make sure that everyone is as safe as possible – and they are grossly under-appreciated (in my opinion, anyway!)

I’ve never tried my hand at roping anything, although I’ve always thought it would be really great to learn how to rope.  I just never even knew of a place to go to learn how to rope!  My own attempts to self-teach were totally laughable!  Phil called me the other day and told me that he was given four  Houston Rodeo concert tickets and asked us if we’d like to join him and Angela on a short little vacation trip to the rodeo!  I sure would love to go, but we need to find out if we can get the time off of work before we say yes.  It sure sounds like a wonderful trip!

Knowing how much my wife loves horses, I would be really surprised if she said she didn’t want to go.  I hope she can get the time off from work!

Cooler weather is moving in

I am just not ready for cooler weather! Although the beauty of changing leaves is awesome, I really don’t like it when I have to put on a jacket to go outside. I am a shirt-sleeves kind of guy! Yes, I know that I COULD go out in the cold without a coat, but I’m not one of those mentally ill teenagers who go around in shorts and flip flops at 20 degrees below zero! I’d love to live in a tropical climate, but until I win the lottery I have to stay right here! I always do well on the small change tickets, but never get any of the real “big” money. Not for lack of trying, though!

Finding local businesses

My brother has been telling me that he wants to open a catering business in his town.  He thinks that there is a strong market for it because there are a lot of “high end” businesses that he thinks that will use his services.  So he’s been looking at ways to advertise his new business and was thinking about using the justclicklocal.com website.  So I went to the website to check it out for myself.  I saw that the website can be used to find just about any kind of product or service anywhere in the country.  For example, I can find a dog walker in Miami FL, a dentist in Pittsburg PA or an auto mechanic in Charlotte, NC just by typing in the keywords and location!

So, just to try it out, and to help him out I was looking around the site some more and found that he could list his business for free!  I thought it seemed easy enough to do.  So I recommend that you give it a try yourself if you are looking for a local business, or want to advertise your own – give this site a chance!

Disputing a credit card charge

There used to be a time when the credit card companies backed me up when I made a claim, disputing a payment. Well, those days sure seem to be over! There was a charge on my American Express card last May for $197 for a product that I did order. However I then subsequently cancelled that order and the merchandise was never received. I have proof that I contacted the company and cancelled the order, and I have an email from the company acknowledging the cancellation. Yet American Express keeps telling me that the charge is valid and that I have to pay it! So every month I have to reopen the claim. It is getting very tiring and I am thinking about cancelling that credit card! I have plenty of other credit cards that I can use – I don’t need the aggravation that goes along with this one!

The right message

My mother is constantly sending me clippings in the mail about some Celebrity Speakers or Motivational Speakers that are coming to the area that she wants me to go see with her.  Or should I say HEAR with her?  She thinks that motivational speakers are fantastic, and I’ve gone to hear a couple of them with her, but I have to admit that although they do a really good job, the main point of their speech is to keep a positive attitude and how they kept plugging along to get some kind of help through a hard time that they had and they got the help that they needed.

Most of the time, the help that they needed (and got) was close at hand, provided by someone close to them.  I haven’t heard many motivational speakers talk about how everyone they knew turned their backs on them and a complete stranger helped them out!  Well, notwithstanding the few wealthy people who sponsored entire classes to go to college after they graduate high school (and yes, that is motivational to finish school if you have a wealthy sponsor!)

I’d love to give an aspiring motivational speaker some speaking tips.  Take a good hard look at your speech and ask yourself if the message you are delivering is appropriate to the audience?  Telling someone to pull themselves up by their bootstraps isn’t going to help someone who has no boots! Of course, you shouldn’t tell them to just give up, either. There is a fine line there. If you are going to give someone a pep talk about improving their lives, it would be great if you provided resources to help them, and not just a pep rally.

Pumpkin time

Pumpkin patch time! Today we went to the local pumpkin farm to pick out our pumpkin. They were giving free hayrides and selling hot apple cider. The kids went a little crazy trying to pick out their pumpkins. I told them that they could each pick out a pumpkin for themselves and then we would bring them home and decorate them with markers. We will be decorating them tomorrow!

Addiction to pain medicine

One sad fact of life is that so many people that become drug addicts start out as innocent victims of some kind of accident that puts them in a lot of pain.  The doctors, in their efforts to relieve that pain give the patients a medicine, such as the very popular vicodin, that is highly effective in controlling pain, but is also highly addictive.

One of the most populat television show characters, House, is addicted to vicodin.  On a recent episode we watched House agree to go to vicodin rehab in order to get his medical license back.  It was suspended but he was told that if he went to one of the vicodin rehab centers that he would be reinstated after the doctors cleared him.  I think that this particular show has shown a lot of good information about how easily one can fall into the life of an addict, and how not all addicts are out in the street mugging people!

Happy Birthday baby sister!

Today is my baby sister’s birthday! She’s had a rough year, adjusting to life with her daughters after her hubby passed away. I’m glad that she’s finally started to date! I hope this coming year is full of love and laughter for her; she deserves it!

There was something different about Lillian

Last month Lillian went to Las Vegas for a week.  She was so excited about going; she had been planning the trip for months!  All she talked about was the casinos and the shows and the food that she was going to enjoy while she was there.  Well, I saw Lillian last week, for the first time since she got back and she asked me if I noticed anything different about her.  Well, I didn’t want to be a boorish sterotypical male and tell her that she looked sexier than every, but I did tell her that Las Vegas must agree with her because she looked better than ever!

She laughed with delight and told me that she had seen some Las Vegas Plastic Surgeons while she was there and had a breast augmentation done. She had been planning it the whole time! Well, the difference was subtle, but she looked terrific, so I’m sure she’s pleased with the results.  Lillian said that now her clothes fit her much better and she feels good about how she looks.  I told her that if she was happy with the way she looked, that’s all that really matters!

Wacky calculator

Have you ever had a calculator that gave you the wrong answers from time to time?  I have a solar-powered calculator that seems to have “lost it” somehow.  When I was given this calculator, I was thrilled – no more replacing batteries!  But lately I’ve been getting a lot of wrong answers from it.  I’m certain that I entered the correct data, so maybe one of the key pads has died.  So I guess it’s time to throw it away, but I hate to throw away an electronic gadget.  It’s bad for the environment, you know?  But I can’t keep on collecting dead electronic junk either!  I wonder if there is a local place that I can take this to…..  I’ll have to do a little research on that.  If you know of anyplace that takes dead calculators, let me know!

Replacing our kitchen sink

My wife has never liked the kitchen sink in this house.  It is badly scratched up and because of that condition, it is difficult to clean.  She asked me to help her find a reasonably priced undermount stainless steel sink to buy to replace it.  Well, I was resisting the project; I thought that replacing the sink would be a big ordeal, and a huge expense.  But the prices of sinks at the mrdirectint.com have made me reconsider the project; we may very well replace that sink after all!

Fruit flies

I understand that fruit flies come into the house via the fresh fruit that we buy at the grocery store, but I don’t understand how they travel from the kitchen area all the way into the bathroom.  It just doesn’t make sense to me that we didn’t have any kind of drain flies in the bathroom until we brought fruit in the house and started seeing fruit flies around the compost bucket!  My wife tells me that they are just fruit flies, and there really isn’t a whole lot we can about them if we want to keep bringing fruit into the house.  That’s really too bad, I enjoy the fresh fruit, but I hate the fruit flies!
