A Maine vacation

Last year we went to Boothbay Harbor Maine to visit Aunt Ellen for a week.  We spent a lot of time sightseeing, going to see lighthouses in the area, and shopping in the tourist trap section of  Boothbay Harbor.  One of my favorite shops was a glass blowing studio.  I’ve enjoyed watching glass blowers at work; their ability to make those beautiful figurines with molten glass simply amazes me!

And of course, we had to buy souvenir T-shirts, and walk along the wharf, enjoying the sights and sounds of the harbor.  There are a lot of upper-class ships there!  I always wonder about how it must be to have that kind of luxurious lifestyle!  One afternoon Aunt Ellen suggested that we eat dinner one evening at the Boothbay Harbor Restaurant called Brown’s Wharf.  Brown’s Wharf isn’t just a restaurant, it is also a Motel and a Marina, with all the flavor of Maine that one could hope to enjoy.   Definitely someplace I’d like to go to again!

New cordless phone

I went shoppTecing with my wife today and ended up buying a new cordless phone. This one comes with three handsets, and has talking Caller ID! I had never heard of talking Caller ID before, and I think that will be a great feature for us because our phone rings a lot of the time when it really isn’t convenient to stop what we are doing to go look and see who is calling! That durn things seem to ring at dinnertime almost every night! We don’t like to just ignore it, in case it is an emergency, but most of the time it’s a salesperson that we really don’t want to talk to during dinner! So this will be great – to be able to just keep eating without getting up if we hear that it is not a family member or a friend calling!

Senior living

My uncle Bill and my Aunt Diane have started to look into Retirement Communities in Canada.  Their big old house in Quebec is getting too big for them to be able to keep up.  They’ve been holding on to it for a long time, thinking that their kids would want it when they passed on, but their kids have all told them recently that all they would do is sell it; no one wants to keep it.  So Uncle Bill and Aunt Diane have decided that it is time to get into Retirement Living and stop worrying about keeping up their old family home.

They have been looking for Retirement Homes  in the area because they want to stay in easy reach of their family and friends, so they have been using the senioropolis.com website to help them to find the right place to live.  That website has a lot of helpful information and resources find Retirement Residences in Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia,  Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta.

Gift shop

After we ate at the Golden Corral last night we drove across the street to the gift shop at the Cracker Barrel. We did that because my wife suddenly remembered that her new boss’s birthday is Wednesday and she needed to get a gift for her. So we went inside and browsed around for a while. I like their gift shop; they always have new a different things there to see. And I always like the smell of the store! I was surprised to see so many Halloween and Christmas items out already! My wife ended up buying a funny birthday card and several scented votive candles. She said she didn’t know her boss very well, but knew that she liked scented candles, so she felt that this was a “safe” gift to give her.

A new generation

During the family dinner that we went to last weekend, I saw my pregnant niece for the first time in months. She says that she is due in December, but she looks a lot larger than I would expect for a December due date! She was showing off the pictures of her ultrasound that showed the baby’s face, feet, and hands. They were hoping to find out what sex the baby was but the baby was too coy to give that up! So she was saying that she was unhappy about not knowing because she wanted to be able to buy baby things in either pink or blue instead of green and yellow.

I asked her if she had any nursery furniture yet for the baby and she said that she didn’t have anything at all! So she said that she is going to need everything you would possibly need for a baby, from strollers to cribs to diapers. My wife and I are thinking about getting her an activity set for her baby shower.

Hush puppies

Last night we went to eat dinner at the Golden Corral Restaurant.  It was an adventure getting there because the road we usually take to get there was closed due to a traffic accident and we had to seek a detour in unfamiliar territory.  We eventually got there, though, so all was well.  I was glad to see that they were serving hush puppies; for some reason there are not very many restaurants around here that sell them and I like them a lot.  I don’t know why my wife doesn’t cook them!  I would think that they would be simple enough to cook.  Hmmmm….. maybe it’s because if she cooked them we wouldn’t eat out as often!  Now I see her plan!
