Keeping an eye on the time

My nephew Steve has a penchant for watches.  Yesterday when I was at the family dinner at Ann’s house Steve asked me if I’d like to see his new Seiko Kinetic watch that he had just received as a high school graduation gift last spring.  He seems to have a different watch for every occasion, and every outfit.  I asked him why he has so many watches and he told me that he had inherited several of them from his father’s side of the family, but that likes to collect them.  So I guess I know what kinds of gifts I can get him in the future!  I just have to try to make sure it is one he doesn’t already have.  I’ll just ask him to pick out something from the collection at bluedial.com in my price range when his next birthday is coming up.

Fireworks in August

I went to a big family dinner last night at my sister Ann’s  house.  She had invited the family there to visit with her step-daughter that was visiting from out of state.  Much to my surprise my mother and a different sister decided that this particular family dinner was a good time to have a very public argument!  My poor sister Ann was mortified!  This was NOT exactly what she had in mind when she invited the family over to visit with her step-daughter!  I felt so bad for everyone there.  I wonder what will come of it!

Scary stories

Have you ever seen a ghost?  I’ve never actually seen one, but there have been strange things that happened in my life that can’t be explained.  My wife tells me that our house is haunted, but I try hard to not believe it.  I try to rationalize everything.  But I DO love to read scary stories and watch scary shows!  My wife thinks I’m crazy, she hates to be scared and won’t read or watch anything spooky!  Here is one of the unexplained spooky happenings at our house.

One summer’s day I heard some noises coming from the upstairs bedroom.  Noises like someone was rocking in the rocking chair we kept up there.  And a sound like someone humming!  It was odd because my wife and I were the only ones in the house!  My wife heard the noises too, and she insisted that we go upstairs to investigate it.  Our dogs were totally spooked and refused to go upstairs with us, which was odd because they usually go everywhere we go, including upstairs!

When we got upstairs, we looked around and saw nothing but the regular furnishings, but the rocking chair WAS rocking slightly, as if someone had just gotten out of the chair.  I told my wife that there must be a logical explanation, but the windows were closed and there was no breeze from any source.  My wife, however, said that it just HAD to be a ghost that had been sitting in the chair, rocking it!

Last week I bought the book called “The Birthing House” by Christopher Ransom.  So far I’ve only had time to read chapter 1 and 2, but I have to say that it is really hard to put down!  It promises to be a great spooky story!

Queen Ann Lace jelly

I stopped at a local farmer’s market yesterday afternoon on my way home from work.  That’s the first time I’ve been to that particular farmer’s market.  Boy, those veggies looked so inviting!  I bought a half dozen ears of freshly picked silver queen corn to eat for supper.  I sure do love freshly picked corn; there is nothing like it in the world!  One of the farmers there was selling pastries and home made jelly and granola.  He was offering taste tests of his Queen Ann Lace jelly.  Well, I know what Queen Ann Lace flowers are, but never heard of making jelly with them!  So I gladly accepted the offer of a taste.  Overall it wasn’t an unpleasant jelly, but it was on the tart side.  The label says that there is lemon flavor added, so that would explain the tartness!  But after I swallowed the jelly my eyes started to water!  Well, I don’t want to be buying jelly that I might have an allergy to, so I said no thanks, but did buy a piece of his peach cobbler.

Sprucing up the place

I was trimming the grass around the house yesterday when I noticed that several of our exterior shutters were showing some serious signs of age and weather.  When we first bought this place we didn’t like the color of the shutters, but we agreed that we would just live with them as they are until they needed to be replaced.  Well, I think the time has come, and now we will be shopping around for replacement shutters!
