Keeping an eye on the time

My nephew Steve has a penchant for watches.  Yesterday when I was at the family dinner at Ann’s house Steve asked me if I’d like to see his new Seiko Kinetic watch that he had just received as a high school graduation gift last spring.  He seems to have a different watch for every occasion, and every outfit.  I asked him why he has so many watches and he told me that he had inherited several of them from his father’s side of the family, but that likes to collect them.  So I guess I know what kinds of gifts I can get him in the future!  I just have to try to make sure it is one he doesn’t already have.  I’ll just ask him to pick out something from the collection at bluedial.com in my price range when his next birthday is coming up.

Fireworks in August

I went to a big family dinner last night at my sister Ann’s  house.  She had invited the family there to visit with her step-daughter that was visiting from out of state.  Much to my surprise my mother and a different sister decided that this particular family dinner was a good time to have a very public argument!  My poor sister Ann was mortified!  This was NOT exactly what she had in mind when she invited the family over to visit with her step-daughter!  I felt so bad for everyone there.  I wonder what will come of it!

Scary stories

Have you ever seen a ghost?  I’ve never actually seen one, but there have been strange things that happened in my life that can’t be explained.  My wife tells me that our house is haunted, but I try hard to not believe it.  I try to rationalize everything.  But I DO love to read scary stories and watch scary shows!  My wife thinks I’m crazy, she hates to be scared and won’t read or watch anything spooky!  Here is one of the unexplained spooky happenings at our house.

One summer’s day I heard some noises coming from the upstairs bedroom.  Noises like someone was rocking in the rocking chair we kept up there.  And a sound like someone humming!  It was odd because my wife and I were the only ones in the house!  My wife heard the noises too, and she insisted that we go upstairs to investigate it.  Our dogs were totally spooked and refused to go upstairs with us, which was odd because they usually go everywhere we go, including upstairs!

When we got upstairs, we looked around and saw nothing but the regular furnishings, but the rocking chair WAS rocking slightly, as if someone had just gotten out of the chair.  I told my wife that there must be a logical explanation, but the windows were closed and there was no breeze from any source.  My wife, however, said that it just HAD to be a ghost that had been sitting in the chair, rocking it!

Last week I bought the book called “The Birthing House” by Christopher Ransom.  So far I’ve only had time to read chapter 1 and 2, but I have to say that it is really hard to put down!  It promises to be a great spooky story!

Queen Ann Lace jelly

I stopped at a local farmer’s market yesterday afternoon on my way home from work.  That’s the first time I’ve been to that particular farmer’s market.  Boy, those veggies looked so inviting!  I bought a half dozen ears of freshly picked silver queen corn to eat for supper.  I sure do love freshly picked corn; there is nothing like it in the world!  One of the farmers there was selling pastries and home made jelly and granola.  He was offering taste tests of his Queen Ann Lace jelly.  Well, I know what Queen Ann Lace flowers are, but never heard of making jelly with them!  So I gladly accepted the offer of a taste.  Overall it wasn’t an unpleasant jelly, but it was on the tart side.  The label says that there is lemon flavor added, so that would explain the tartness!  But after I swallowed the jelly my eyes started to water!  Well, I don’t want to be buying jelly that I might have an allergy to, so I said no thanks, but did buy a piece of his peach cobbler.

Sprucing up the place

I was trimming the grass around the house yesterday when I noticed that several of our exterior shutters were showing some serious signs of age and weather.  When we first bought this place we didn’t like the color of the shutters, but we agreed that we would just live with them as they are until they needed to be replaced.  Well, I think the time has come, and now we will be shopping around for replacement shutters!

Guilty pleasure

I have to admit that I’ve been guilty of going to a fast food restaurant around lunch time and just getting a strawberry milkshake instead of a “real lunch.” It has been so hot lately that I don’t really want a hot lunch, and I am usually in a rush when it happens so I don’t want to bother to actually EAT anything. So a strawberry shake is cool, filling, and delicious. I have to be careful though because I know that I’ll pack on the weight if I keep doing that! I wish that these places would sell “good for you” smoothies as a healthy alternative to milkshakes!

Protection from hackers

I’ve noticed that there seem to be a lot of different anti-virus and anti-malware software programs available for sale.  And I’ve noticed that whenever I buy a new computer, there seems to be some kind of  internet security already loaded on the computer.  It used to be that these programs that were preloaded were free, but the last couple of times I bought a new computer it seemed that you were only given a few weeks of free use before you had to register the program and pay some money in order to keep it.

I think that it is a shame that when you spend so much money on buying a new computer that you don’t just get that kind of protection pre-loaded for free forever.  Although computers are slowly becoming more affordable, they are still a major out of pocket expense for many families.  And I think that the companies that make them are making enough money to be able to come up with a good deal with the software companies to provide protection from hackers to the consumer for free.

Wild thunderstorms

One thing is for sure; living around here we sure get some wild thunderstorms! I don’t know if there is a “good time” or not for weather like that, but I have to say that if we are going to have wild weather I would prefer that it happen during daylight house so I could be able to see it if something really bad like a tornado was nearby! It is rather spooky when the bad weather hits at night. Although the lightning is rather cool to watch as it snakes and streaks across the sky, and the way it illuminates everything nearby, it still is rather disturbing to not be able to see what might be coming along with the lightning! And it is very strange to get up in the morning to see the damage that might have been done overnight; what things are in your yard that used to be somewhere else, and what things that you own that might not be there anymore.

Investing in precious metals

Mygrand-father had a lot of interest in investing in the precious metals.  I can remember when I was younger he would take me to see his gold coins that he kept in a safe deposit box at the bank.  He didn’t own a lot of them, but he sure was proud of the couple that he had!  He would tell me that they were set aside for hard times.  When he passed away my father got them.  I wonder whatever happened to them!

I’ve become interested recently in learning about how to put gold in an IRA or a 401K account.  To be honest I don’t know the difference between a  gold IRA and a gold 401k account.  My wife told me that there is a website called goldcoinsgain.com that has a lot of information about IRA gold.  She said that it explains which kinds of gold can be put into accounts, and it explains how to put gold in my IRA.  So I guess I’ll be spending some time reading that site!

Papaya

I had never had a papaya to eat until this morning.  My wife bought a couple at the grocery store, thinking that it would be fun to share them with me.  She had eaten one in a restaurant a while ago and thought it was wonderful.  So this morning she took one and washed it off, sliced it in half, scooped out the seeds (I wonder if the seeds are poisonous, and if not, what they taste like?) and squirted some fresh lemon juice on them.

It was quite tasty!  I was surprised; I was reluctant to try it.  I’m glad she bought two of them, we’ll be eating the second one tomorrow morning for breakfast!  I’ve heard that they are good for your health to eat.

Luxury vacation

I understand that envy is one of the big “sins.”  I also understand that we are ALL “sinners!”  At least that is what the marquee in front of the local churches claim!

Well, in this economy, it is hard not to envy the people that can afford any kind of luxury, isn’t it?  Many people are not even able to afford the luxury of going away somewhere on vacation, and are using their vacation time from work as “staycations” and stay at home and try to entertain themselves locally.

For those lucky folks that can afford a luxury vacation, but want to save some money by reducing their travel time and cost, an Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Hotel just might be the answer to their vacation requirements.  By staying in one of the many Oceanfront Myrtle Beach Hotels you can still have your luxury vacation away from home.  There are a lot of fun attractions to keep a vacationer that is staying in a Myrtle Beach Hotel busy and happy.  There are shows, amusement parks, golf courses, and of course the lure of the ocean.

All within a day’s drive of many east coast cities and towns.  A great way to have a great vacation without spending too much money.

Series finale of Monk

I love the television show Monk. Tonight is the series finale of the show, and I am definitely planning to watch it! Today is a Monk marathon on television and it is a good chance for me to catch some of the shows that I’ve missed. I really wish that it was not the series finale; I am going to miss that show a lot! I love how the show takes on so many twists and turns and how Monk, even with all of his phobias, manages to be a productive member of society. I think that it is an inspiration to all of us, demonstrating that everyone has a niche that they could find and use to benefit the world.

Attention NFL sports fans

Did you know that you can get a great deal on the nfl sunday ticket program that Direct TV offers?  The nfl sunday ticket price gives you the opportunity to watch over 200 nfl games over the nfl season!  That is a LOT of football!  According to their nfl sunday ticket schedule, you can watch up to sixteen games every week!

And you can keep tabs on the scores of all of the games without missing a single play of the favorite game you are watching!  Isn’t technology great!

Ladies, this is a great way to make sure your hubby is entertained while you go off and play with your Red Hat lady friends, getting dressed up and going out to tea while your hubbies are safely glued to the sofa watching their favorite games!  All you have to do is make sure there is plenty of food and drink for him to grab when he wants it, and he won’t miss you for a moment!  Heck, he won’t even realize you are gone!

Freecycle

I think Freecycle is great, but it has its limitations. We get (and give) some great stuff for free, but there are times when it can be aggravating. For example, when you are trying to negotiate a pickup or dropoff, the other party involved doesn’t seem to want to exchange telephone numbers, they simply state that they are leaving something by the curb for you to pick up at a certain time. But sometimes that certain time is simply impossible to meet, and when you send them an email about it to try to let them know (and renegotiate) they don’t always respond. So it can get quite frustrating!  And if you are trying to give something away and the person doesn’t show up to get it, and doesn’t call you to let you know that they aren’t coming (or got lost) or to renegotiate a different time, that is very frustrating as well!

Maybe they ought to develop a rating/ranking system like e-bay, where feedback is given.  I think that would make it a lot easier to use!

Compatability

When the personal computer first came on the scene, back in the 1980’s we had a hard decision to make – Apple or IBM.  They were incompatable with each other.  Many consumers preferred the ease of the Apple, but many businesses went with IBM.  Well, I should clarify that a little bit I think – there were a lot of creative businesses that went with Apple, but the nuts and bolts number crunchers tended to go with IBM.  Anyway, the operating systems were so different that you could not file share, and this was a big problem.

At some point in time along came some geniuses who created the PDF file.  The PDF file can be read by both systems.  Even Linux!  A miracle!  Opening up the lines of communication.  Along with the invention of the PDF came the need for software for pdf conversion.  This type of software makes it possible to convert pdf to word or to convert word to pdf.  It also allows users to edit the pdf file directly.  This solves many problems between the different operating systems.  Now maybe we can all get along!

The smell of freshly baked bread

My wife baked some fresh home made bread this morning. The aroma of it baking just about drove me crazy! I love the smell of it cooking. I start to hover around the oven, waiting like a vulture for the bread to come out and be devoured. Yes, I know it takes a couple of minutes for it to cool, but it doesn’t get too much of a chance! In no time at all I have the bread board, the bread cutting knife and fresh butter ready for the attack! A slice of fresh-baked, still warm from the oven bread is about the closest thing to heaven I can think of!
