Computer support

I’m sorry to say that I am not a computer expert.  I’m slowly learning more about computers every day, but there is still a lot to learn!  I’ll probably never be as much of an expert as my brother-in-law is.  I’ve got other things to occupy my attention and time!  And as far as I’m concerned, if there is one expert in the family, then there is no need for another one!  In the spirit of “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” my brother-in-law and I have come to a good understanding that we will help each other out as best we can however we can.

My brother-in-law makes his living as the IT support person for several private companies.  And he makes pretty good money at it, too.  So whenever a computer glitch happens that I can’t figure out with a simple re-start, virus scan, or defrag, I will not hesitate to give him a phone call and ask him to check it out.  What is really cool is that he has installed on our computers a remote access software program that allows him to just stay at home and take over my computer from his computer and check out what is wrong, and fix it!  I think that is the just about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life!

Renting movies

I love movies.  I’ve spent a lot of money buying DVDs.  My wife has started to give me a lot of “flack” about how much money I spend buying DVDs.  She argues that I’m spending a lot of money (about $20) per DVD and only watching it once or twice; it would make so much more sense (to her) to rent the movie for a couple of dollars and then return it.  Well, in theory that is a good idea, but it is a hassle going to the movie rental store all the time.  So my son recently bought me a year’s subscription to Netflix.  I was annoyed at first because I felt it was an insult directed at me regarding my spending habits.  But I have to say that I’m really enjoying the convenience of having the movies mailed to me!
